I AM LEGEND Infected Concept Designs by Jerad S. Marantz

World War Z is right around the corner, but another "almost zombie" movie that came out a while back was I Am Legend (2007) starring Will Smith.

Like World War Z, the film reinvents the zombie film concept using Infected (also known as "Hemocytes" or "Dark Seekers") instead of vampires or zombies. It's based on I Am Legend by Richard Matheson.

At first the film was going to use practical effects, but director Francis Lawrence decided to use computer generated imagery (CGI) to portray the Infected instead. This increased the budget and, some say, reduced the effectiveness of the creatures.

One of the artists that helped design the Infected practical makeup effects was Jerad S. Marantz who also worked on Grimm, G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013) and The Amazing Spider-Man (2012). These designs were for done for for Quantum Creations FX.

Official Synopsis
Robert Neville is a brilliant scientist, but even he could not contain the terrible virus that was unstoppable, incurable, and man-made. Somehow immune, Neville is now the last human survivor in what is left of New York City and maybe the world. For three years, Neville has faithfully sent out daily radio messages, desperate to find any other survivors who might be out there. But he is not alone. Mutant victims of the plague -- The Infected -- lurk in the shadows... watching Neville's every move... waiting for him to make a fatal mistake. Perhaps mankind's last, best hope, Neville is driven by only one remaining mission: to find a way to reverse the effects of the virus using his own immune blood. But he knows he is outnumbered... and quickly running out of time.
